A Man Above Harm, Freedom that Enslaves, and the Power of Phroneo

A Man Above Harm, Freedom that Enslaves, and the Power of Phroneo

ON JUNE 6, 2020 BY FRLYNCHIN LIVING THE FAITH, ORTHODOXY, PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTION, UNCATEGORIZED
“Let this mind be in you …” (Phil. 2:5).

Mind, in the above instance in the Greek, phroneo. When applied to the Christian life it means, basically, to have understanding, to be wise. To think as to think soberly. It is in some sense a governing principle. One’s phroneo will indicate one’s state.

Phroneo can become corrupted and perverted.

St. Paul says in Romans, “For they that are after the flesh do mind [phroneo] the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit” (8:5).

The mind will govern the orientation, the trajectory, to goals of a person’s life, “Set your mind [phroneo] on things above, not on things on the earth” (Col. 3:2).

When the mind is controlled by the world, that which is created to be a life-giving force becomes a destructive one. “Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind [phroneo] earthly things” (Phil. 3:19).

The “mind” is a spiritual reality. Thus, one may see, most of all, in the modern-day a very concerted effort to control the mind. The enemy knows its power. I have, in the past touched on this subject before, see here and here.

The enemy seeks to enslave the mind by chaining it to this fallen world. He constantly offers “freedom,” which is the broad path. He offers because he cannot force anyone to betray himself, that is a person must willingly and freely give himself over to spiritual slavery through a perverse phroneo.

This is the demonic form of control: deluding people into handing over their God-given freedom and thinking that they are “free” in doing so.

It is through the illusion of “freedom” that the enemy deludes people into freely compromising themselves, to the extent sometimes that they even love slavery, and will be convinced that slavery is actual freedom. In this state they will guard their slavery at all costs, thinking they are fighting for “freedom.” This is a scary state.

Christ the Lord offers the Cross, which seems to be slavery. Deny yourself, take it up, He says. Lose your life and you will find it (cf. Matt. 16:24ff). Enter by the narrow gate (cf. Matt 7:13ff). Through what appears to be “loss” and “confinement” true spiritual freedom, true liberty, is found.

When the phroneo ascends, through the cross, to heavenly things and is enlightened by the truth of God, it becomes truly free.

The mind of Christ, the true phroneo, keeps a man; while guarded by it, nothing can harm such a man. As St. John Chrysostom says, “Nothing can harm a man who does not harm himself.” The saint has a whole small treatise on this subject, which is well worth reading in its entirety.

St. John tells us, “I will demonstrate clearly that no one could inflict … injury or bring … ruin upon us unless we betray ourselves.” Speaking of ultimate things, he says, “Damage does not come from another [that is an outside source] but comes directly from within the man himself.” We might sum up this thought by saying no one is a victim unless he victimizes himself.

To understand more completely St. John instructs that we must comprehend wherein lies true human virtue. He subsequently discounts all the things that the world holds dear, such as riches, fame, health, civil liberty, and so forth. All these are not virtues at all in and of themselves. He eloquently writes, “What is not the virtue of man? It is not riches that you should fear poverty. It is not health of the body that you should dread sickness. It is not the opinion of the public, that you should view an evil reputation with alarm. It is not life simply for life’s own sake that death should terrify you. It is not freedom that you should avoid servitude.”

How closely he strikes to all our “modern” values! He then tells us what is the virtue of man, “The virtue of man is found in carefully holding to true doctrine and to living a morally correct life. Not ever the devil himself will be able to rob a man of these things, if he who possesses them guards them carefully.” Keep in mind he is not speaking about “moralizing” but rather the lofty sense of moral, which is not just “do’s and don’ts.” True morality is tied to true spirituality, for they are spiritual principles.

Again he makes clear, “The virtue of man is found in the right actions of the soul.”

Thus, a man is truly free or enslaved in his phroneo. Without discounting the grace of God, St. John makes clear that when we are enslaved it is only because we have chosen to be so, spiritually speaking.

He says, “They have entirely abandoned themselves to pleasure and are therefore enslaved to it.” That is, in brief, Christ the Lord in His Incarnation set mankind free, thus when we return to slavery it is of our own free will. This is why the enemy works so hard to have us of our own free will relinquish the true freedom offered by our Lord.

In short, many events are related to this fact. But, St. John says, “All these things cannot even slightly disturb the man who is brave, self-restrained, and watchful.”

If we maintain our true virtue, then all things will work for our benefit and salvation.

This spiritual principle is contrary to the modern “anti-virtues.” It is due to the acceptance of many of these anti-virtue that there is currently so much strife and turmoil. People are seeking “virtue” in externals.

Further, St. John while speaking of the Three Holy Youths, teaches that they were able to keep themselves in the midst of a godless environment because “They had spiritual wisdom superior to worldly ways.”

Since they “showed themselves noble and brave, they won for themselves the help of God and so accomplished their aim … they kept the Law in a foreign land.” They guarded as most precious the phroneo which had been given to them, through the revelation of God to Israel. St. John confirms this by saying, “The reason I admire those youths, calling them blessed and wanting to be like them, is not because they trampled on the flame and vanquished the force of fire. It is because they were bound, cast into the furnace, and delivered to the fire for the sake of true doctrine. This is really what brought about the completion of their triumph.”

Clearly, we are told, it is not the fact that they were not burned that makes them so great, it is rather for the fact that they would not change their God-given phroneo when told to do so, they were willing to be cast into the fire for true doctrine. St. John says this is what we, Christians, are called to emulate. The three youths were preserved in the fire because they had first preserved in themselves, to the point of death, true and right phroneo – doctrine.

“I,” St. John, “appeal to you,” Christians “to be alert and serious-minded in the Lord at all times. May we endure all painful things bravely so that we may obtain those everlasting and pure blessings in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The world cannot take from us true faith unless we give it freely to it. We are the only ones who can betray ourselves, for if we hold fast to the phroneo of Christ, then nothing can harm us, unless we harm ourselves.

This is why the enemy is working so diligently to seduce everyone, but most especially right-believing Christians, to willingly and freely compromise themselves and their faith. Thus, we must understand that there is a war for our phroneo, and we must, by God’s grace, guarded it with all our strength. Compromise will mean defeat and even possibly death.

the blood of the cross has made peace

It is 11:59 AM Friday morning. It will soon be 12 o’clock PM Noon. Time keeps flying by like a vampire bat.

Outside this afternoon (it is now 12 o’clock PM Noon) it is hot so we have the central air system going full steam. It is a blessing to live in an air conditioned cage. I am having a normal day during this world wide COVID-19 plague. People are still dying by the thousands, but here in America business as usual. The policy of our Government is to keep the Military Industrial Complex running. The world needs America’s weapons of destruction, so do not close down production because of this deadly plague.

I got up this morning around 6:30 AM. I got up sat in our dining room seeking to wake up. Carol was already up having breakfast. So I woke up made a fresh pot of coffee and then messed with our main computer. After messing with our main computer I had breakfast and wrote in my paper diary.

After writing in my diary I read from a book titled, ‘The Wonderful Works of God’ by Herman Bavinck. Carol worked outside cleaning our garage while I read Bavinck. I did leave the house around 10 o’clock AM to check out our local Goodwill thrift store to see if they had used books for sale. I went to Goodwill, but once again I noticed they are not putting out any new used books. It seems all the thrift stores have stopped restocking their shelves with donated used books. Weird.

So the day goes by. I will close to write and read from a book titled, ‘The Holy Trinity In The Life Of The Church’ Edited By Khaled Anatolios.

Last night I read ‘Reformed Ethics: Created, Fallen, And Converted Humanity’ Volume One by Herman Bavinck’ late into the night. I should read soon Herman Bavinck’s four volume Reformed Dogmatics.

The Social Mind

It is 3:01 PM Thursday afternoon. It is a very hot day. We closed up the house this morning and turned on the central air system.

I got up this morning around 6:15 AM. When I got up Carol was getting dressed to go for her morning walk. This morning Carol went out for breakfast with an old girlfriend. While she was gone I filmed a video for my Youtube channel. I also read this morning from a book titled,’The Story Retold: A Biblical-Theological Introduction To The New Testament’ by G. K. Beale & Benjamin L. Gladd.

I left the house around 11:30 AM for a hair cut appointment. I had to wait over two hours before I got my hair cut. It took only a couple of minutes to get my hair cut because I have little hair left on my head. I basically wanted the hair in back of my head shortened. After getting my hair cut I went to a grocery store to buy a few food items. When I got home Carol was here from her outings with her girlfriend.

While I was waiting to get my hair cut I read from a book titled, ‘Main Currents in American Thought: The Romantic Revolution in America, 1800-1860’ Volume II By Vernon Louis Parrington that came in the mail this morning.

Last night I basically read from a novel titled, ‘Damned’ by Chuck Palahniuk. Carol went to bed around 9 o’clock PM and I went to bed around 11 o’clock PM.

So this day has gone by normal. I will close to drift. I am tired.

Life Is Short. Death Is Forever.

It is 1:15 PM Wednesday afternoon here in West Michigan. It is another sunny day. This afternoon it is hot so we shut up the house this morning and have the air conditioning unit blasting us cool air. When the house is cold and dark I find myself falling asleep all the time. I tend to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I tend to live in a constant state of exhaustion. Life is for me exhausting. It takes a lot effort for me to live in this dead world.

I got up this morning around 6:25 AM. When I got up my wife had just finished reading the Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy. I got myself a glass of water and sat in our dining room seeking wake up to another day. All our days are written in stone in the Book of God’s Decree’s.

After I woke up somewhat I checked our main computer for e-mail and looked at the News at the, The Huffington Post and National Public Radio. After messing with our main computer I wrote in my paper diary and then drifted through Existence/Reality.

I did leave the house this morning to take stuff to the Holland Rescue Mission for Carol. While at the Mission I checked their used books and found one used book titled ‘Damned’ by Chuck Palahniuk. I did not have this novel by Palahniuk in my Chuck Palahniuk Collection, so that it was a cheap thrill finding this used book today for 94 cents.

I have spent the afternoon in my main study reading Dutch Reformed Theology found in a book titled, ‘The Wonderful Works of God’ by Herman Bavinck. Now I am writing in my online diaries.

Last night I was totally wasted and could absolutely do nothing but lay down in the lower level with my eyes closed. I went to bed around 10:30 PM last night. Carol had gone to bed early as usual. The last book I attempted to read last night was titled, ‘Main Currents in American Thought: The Beginning of Critical Realism in America, 1860-1920’ Volume III By Vernon Louis Parrington.

I will now close. Currently Carol is making potato salad in the kitchen.

Man has always been under law

It is 1:45 PM Tuesday afternoon in the death flow. It is another sunny day. It is predicted to get hot towards the end of this week.

I have had thus far a normal day of existence. I got up this morning around 6:15 AM. When I got up Carol was baking banana bread. I ate breakfast and then messed with our main computer. I usually check our computer for e-mail and look at the News. After messing with our main computer I wrote in my paper diary and read my Reformation commentary on The Book of Joshua.

I left the house around 8:30 AM to mail a book to a Booktuber on the life of Samuel Johnson. I came home after going to the Holland Post Office.

Carol and I left the house around 9 o’clock AM to do errands. While out we checked thrift stores for used books and found nothing to add to our library.

We were home from our errands around 11 o’clock AM. I wrote some more in my paper diary and read for awhile from a book titled, ‘Main Currents in American Thought: The Beginnings of Critical Realism in America, 1860-1920’ Volume III by Vernon Louis Parrington. I dozed for an hour and then woke up to eat something. Now I am writing in my online diaries. Existence keeps floating by.

Last night I read late into the night time hours from a book titled, ‘V. L. Parrington Through the Avenue of Art’ biography by H. Lark Hall.

Yesterday I did mow our back and front lawn. We are living a simple Christian existence. Not much goes on from one day to the next. Next week our children and their families will all be here for a visit. It will be good to see the whole family.

I suppose I will close to face the music. There is no where to go.

the Gilded Age

It is 2:42 PM Monday afternoon. It has been a sunny day. It is around 65 degrees maybe in the 70’s. It has been your typical day. Not much has happened today. Carol has been gone since morning visit cousins. I have been writing in my paper diary, reading my books and waiting out existence. I did mow our back and front yard this afternoon. There is not much else to write. So I will close to wait for night fall.

There must be something to write besides just a brief description of this day. I got up this morning around 7 o’clock AM. When I got up Carol was cooking something to take with her to eat with her cousins. I ate breakfast and then messed with our main computer.

After messing with our main computer I wrote in my paper diary and spent most of the morning reading from a book titled, ‘The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age’ biography by Leo Damrosch. I decided to mow the lawn around Noon and now it is 2:48 PM. I am now waiting to see what comes in the mail this afternoon. Carol told me when she left this morning she did not know when she would be home. Carol likes to talk and she said there was a lot of catching up to do with her cousins.

Last night Carol and I watched PBS Mystery. Carol went to bed around 10 o’clock PM and I stayed up and read late into the night from a book titled, ‘The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age’ biography by Leo Damrosch.

I suppose I will now close to wait for the next major event in the death flow. (The mail just came, I received a used book I had ordered titled, ‘V. L. Parrington Through the Avenue of Art’ biography by H. Lark Hall. I have been reading with much intellectual pleasure Parrington’s book, ‘Main Currents in American Thought: The Beginnings of Critical Realism in America, 1860-1920’ Volume III.)

the Holy Trinity is uncreated

I just realized I had not written anything into my online diaries on Sunday afternoon. So here I am once again writing down a brief summary of my day thus far. I know so much of my life never gets written down. I can only capture fragments of my day to day life here in LiveJournal. But if one reads all that I have written in Crookedfingers one might come to knowledge of my life. Of course my life remains hid in God.

I got up this morning around 7 o’clock AM. When I got up I found my wife doing her morning exercises. I ate breakfast and then made a fresh pot of coffee. After making coffee and messed with our main computer. When I mess with our main computer I mainly check for e-mail, look News and then Youtube. After messing with our main computer I wrote in my paper diary and read from a book titled ‘Reformed Ethics’ by Herman Bavinck.

Carol left for Covenant PCA around 9:50 AM. She got home from church around Noon. Right now she is resting her legs. I have been reading this afternoon from a book titled, ‘The Holy Trinity In The Life Of The Church’ Edited By Khaled Anatolios. Last night I read late into the night from a book titled, ‘The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age’ biography by Leo Damrosch. Yesterday I also read from cover to cover a crime novel titled, ‘Pietr the Latvian’ The First Maigret Novel by Georges Simenon Translated By David Bellos.

There is not much else to report on this Sunday afternoon. Next Sunday afternoon our daughter and her family will be here for a visit. Also next Tuesday not this coming Tuesday our son will be here with his family (he is our youngest son).

I will close to drift. Outside this afternoon it is sunny and breezy. Maybe it will get hot this week.

in the person of Christ the kingdom of God has come down to the earth

It is 2:50 PM Saturday afternoon. It is a sunny day. It is around 60 degrees this afternoon. There is a slight chill in the afternoon sunlight.

I just woke up from a doze. I was woke up by the noise of mail being placed inside our main box. Carol is taking a nap. I have to remind myself that Carol is retired and does not go off to work any longer. Before falling into a light doze I had been reading, ‘Pietr the Latvian’ The First Maigret Novel by George Simenon Translated by David Bellos.

I got up this morning around 6:30 AM. Carol had gotten up around 5 o’clock AM. I spent the morning doing the usual stuff like messing with our main computer, writing in my paper diary and reading. I read this morning for devotions, ‘The Wonderful Works of God’ by Herman Bavinck. Caleb dropped off Cora around 9 o’clock AM for us to watch while he did errands. Emily and Josie are gone visiting Emily’s sister in another state. Emily and Josie will be back sometime this coming Monday evening.

So it has been usual day. Existence just floats by quietly. Last night Carol did not get home from a visitation and then hanging out with friends till 9:30 PM. I spent the evening reading from a book titled, ‘The Collected Stories Of Machado De Assis’ Translated by Margaret Jull Costa & Robin Patterson. Carol and I went to bed early.

While Carol was gone last night I filmed a video for my Youtube channel. Do not remember much else about last night.

Well, I suppose I will close.

American religious history

It is 9:18 AM Friday morning. It is 55 degrees and sunny presently. It feels like early Autumn weather. I do not recall off hand when it will be the first day of Summer 2020. It is too bad people all around me are dying from the Coronavirus Pandemic. It seems to me we have come to accept people are going to die from this plague so let’s go about business like it is normal for people to die from COVID-19. It is better to get the American capitalistic system going than shut down everything due to a deadly plague killing people left and right. Money is king in America. Everybody wants to make a fast buck. Money is the root of all evil.

This morning I woke up around 5:30 AM from a dream. I had to go to the bathroom so I got up. When I went back to bed I could not fall back to sleep so I got up to face existence in a dead world. Carol was already up reading her Bible in our living room area. I fixed a fresh pot of coffee and had a bowl of cereal for a morning meal. Carol left this morning to have breakfast with an old girlfriend. This girlfriend recently divorced her husband after being married 45 years. I wonder why people get divorced after being married for so long? You would think that in their old age folks would want their lover by their side as they are dying or sick in some old folks home. I hate to think I divorced my spouse to leave him or her to die alone. To me a marriage covenant is eternal even into the New Creation. Marriage is eternal. To me love never dies. God hates divorce.

I did not read anything this morning. I have been dozing this morning. I did write in my paper diary this morning. Existence just keeps on decaying.

Last night I read my books and went to bed around 11 o’clock PM. I mainly read from these two books last night, ‘There Is Simply Too Much To Think About: Collected Nonfiction’ By Saul Bellow Edited By Benjamin Taylor and ‘Truth’s Ragged Edge: The Rise of the American Novel’ by Philip F. Gura.
Carol went to bed around 9 o’clock PM and I went to bed around 11 o’clock PM. Now it is another day to count your blessings one by one.

Well I suppose I will close to face the dead American world. Last night we did have Caleb, Emily, Josie, and Cora Leigh over for dinner. They all left around 7:30 PM.

the chills winds blowing from the outer spaces of a mechanistic cosmos

It is 11:41 AM late Thursday morning. A sunny day outside presently. It is around 68 degrees right now.

I have had a normal morning thus far. I got up around 6:30 AM this morning. I hardly slept last night due to our bedroom being extremely hot. We turned off the central air system last night and the house quickly became an oven. My wife sleeps near our bedroom window so she feels the cool air. My wife also keeps a small fan blowing on her during the night and she also a sound machine playing. My wife is a healthy woman, she gets plenty of sound sleep and solid good food. My wife does everything right. It takes a lot out of me constantly viewing my wife’s perfections. I am a mess personally! If I get saved it won’t because I am a perfect person. I am a rotten sinner in need of God’s free grace and mercy all the time.

So I got up this morning and slowly woke up to exist in a world filled with a deadly virus. I mainly wandered the house this morning in a state of mental and physical exhaustion. I read for devotions from a book I read last night titled, ‘The Collected Stories Of Machado De Assis’ Translated By Margaret Jull Costa & Robin Patterson. I did write also a couple of pages of crap into my June 2020 paper diary.

There is not much else to report this morning. We will soon be into the Noontime hours. I plan to read some more of the book ‘Main Currents in American Thought: The Beginnings of Critical Realism in America, 1860-1920’ By Vernon Louis Parrington. I am really enjoying reading this work of American literary history.
